Practical assessment

The practical assessment is the final stage of the assessment process to gain BSE accreditation in most areas. Level 1 accreditation is assessed by practical assessment alone.

BSE Level 1 practical the candidate will be required to collect 75 logbook cases over a period of 12 months before registering for the exam, then on the day the exam consists of scanning and a reporting section.

BSE Level 2 practical the candidate will be required to collect logbook cases (number dependent on which accreditation they are undertaking) over a 24 month period, then on the day the exam consists of a practical scanning assessment and a viva assessment of five patient studies.

How to register for your exam?

  • Sign in to your BSE account before attempting to complete the practical online booking form.
  • Complete the online booking form and select one date only. There is a non-refundable and non-transferable booking fee to pay to secure a place on the assessment.  
  • With the exception of Level 1 accreditation, BSE practical assessments are only available to candidates who have successfully passed the written exam.
  • We aim to provide start times 4-6 weeks before the scheduled assessment. Start times range from 09:00-15:00. The entire assessment duration can last up to 3 hours; please allow plenty of time for your travel. 
  • BSE reserve the right to reject registrations that are not eligible for the practical assessment.

Logbooks

  • Submissions must be made through the online logbook portal up to 8 weeks before the assessment. The practical event registration page will provide further information on logbook deadlines. Please note that due to the pandemic we have modified our submission requirements, this includes changes to the submission deadlines.
  • We recommend that candidates follow the advice which is issued in confirmation emails referencing the registered assessment.

Resubmissions

Resubmissions receive a reserved place subject to the payment of the resubmission fee, submission information will be given within the confirmation correspondence.  

Reasonable adjustments

The practical assessment is set in a hospital echo department and is designed to reflect the candidate's everyday working practice. We can make reasonable adjustments for candidates with health or learning challenges. Candidates must notify us (in advance) of the exact requirements so we can provide the appropriate support during the assessment day. Requests for adjustments must be emailed to [email protected] with the relevant information during the online registration process

Cancellations

  • Cancellations need to be sent by email to [email protected], stating name, membership number, date and time of confirmed assessment and reason for cancellation.
  • Cancellations with less than one week's notice (7 calendar days or less) will be classed as a no-show and automatically fail.
  • Appeals may be considered by the Accreditation Committee in cases of extenuating circumstances.
