Practical assessment

The practical assessment is the final stage of the assessment process to gain BSE accreditation in most areas. Level 1 accreditation is assessed by practical assessment alone.

  • Sign in to your BSE account before attempting to complete the practical online booking form.
  • Complete the online booking form, select one date only, there is a non-refundable and non-transferable £20 booking fee to pay to secure a place on the assessment. Under no circumstance is the booking fee returned. We advise candidates to select one date carefully.
  • With the exception of Level 1 accreditation, BSE practical assessments are only available to candidates who have successfully completed the written exam.
  • All candidates must finish collecting cases before registering. We have an open registration system for the practical assessments, which is available throughout the year.
  • You will be able to choose one date from those available to attend. Assessment places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. When sessions have reached maximum capacity we will establish a waiting list.
  • Once registered, you will receive an automatic email to acknowledge your registration. We aim to provide start times 4-6 weeks before the scheduled assessment. Start times range from 09:00-15:00. The entire assessment duration can last up to 3 hours, please allow plenty of time for your travel.

  • Submissions to the online logbook portal must be made before the assessment, deadlines can be assigned up to 8 weeks before the assessment. The practical event registration page will have further information on deadlines. Please note that due to the pandemic we have modified our submission requirements, this includes changes to the submission deadlines. Two months prior to an assessment are designed for candidates to review the collected cases and ensure that they meet the submission criteria as specified in the accreditation pack.
  • We recommend that candidate follow the advice which is issued in confirmation emails referencing the registered assessment.
  • Please note that some NHS email servers block messages from the logbook portal. Where possible please use an alternative email address.

Download the user guide for the online logbook portal.

Resubmissions received a reserved place subject to the payment of the resubmission fee .

  • Cancellations need to be sent in an email to [email protected], stating name, membership number, date and time of confirmed assessment and reason for cancellation.
  • Cancellations with less than one week's notice (7 calendar days or less) will be classed as a no-show and automatically fail.

Appeals may be considered by the Accreditation Committee in cases of extenuating circumstances.
