Professor Mark Monaghan, founding member of the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE), Immediate Past Director of Non-Invasive Cardiology at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Fellowship panel, discusses how the Fellowship scheme came to be and why it’s so important to offer this accolade.
There are some interesting aspects to becoming one of the oldest BSE members, in that one gets drawn into a variety of projects. So, when our Immediate Past President, Mr Keith Pearce, approached me for my thoughts on establishing a Fellowship of the BSE, I realised that he really meant, can you help us set it up?
I was happy and proud to do so. As you will undoubtedly be aware, many other organisations and societies recognise those members who have a high standing and have made a significant contribution to their particular field. I realised that there was a long list of BSE members who would potentially meet those criteria and be eligible and proud to count themselves as a Fellow of the BSE.
So, with the help of Keith and the Council, criteria for Fellowship were agreed and so far 14 successful applicants can now add FBSE to their name, wear a special lapel badge with pride and achieve special recognition on our website and at our annual meetings.
