Updated clinical indications and triage of echocardiography posters published

Published 29/07/2024

The British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) is delighted to share updated resources designed to assist with triaging of echo referrals.

The original guidance in 2021 has been widely adopted during the first three year cycle of the triage posters. As we enter a new cycle, this gives us the opportunity to update this guidance whilst working with other societies to provide contemporary specialist guidance.

During development of these new posters, we have worked with multiple expert organisations to ensure that the information shown is as accurate and relevant to each area as possible. Many thanks to the British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians, British Cardiovascular Intervention Society, British Cardiovascular Society, British Heart Rhythm Society, British Heart Valve Society, British Society for Heart Failure, GIRFT for Preoperative Assessment, Heart Valve Voice, Intensive Care Society and Primary Care Cardiovascular Society for their involvement.

Professor Dan Augustine, President of the BSE, said “This update of the triage guidance has been a big project, bringing together eleven national societies to offer contemporary, specialist advice on echocardiography triage. It’s important that we have had input from primary and secondary care and I’d like to thank all of the society representatives for their help.

“As with the previous triage guidance, we have developed three triage posters. These cover outpatient requests; inpatient requests and the follow up of those with heart valve disease. We hope this new triage guidance will help departments to standardise the triage process and to help with prioritisation.”
