Our echo skills programme brings together ST4 cardiologists and trainers to create an intensive training opportunity.
We are looking for new faculty to support the courses which will take place in September and November 2025.
Each day comprises of practical scanning stations and case interpretation stations.
How it works
Practical scanning
Delegates have the opportunity to scan real models under supervision. The course is primarily aimed to ensure cardiology SpRs are comfortable in obtaining the basic TTE windows, (i.e. more than a level 1 scan, but not to the detail of level 2 scan). For those with more experience in echo, these sessions can be tailored to the delegate, to cover more in-depth views/interpretation.
Case interpretation
Delegates review echo studies of conditions they will commonly encounter alongside dealing with acutely unwell patients.
Faculty involvement and schedule
The faculty team for each day usually consists of:
- 3-4 case interpretation trainers
- 6-8 practical scanning trainers
- 1-2 course leads
If the maximum number of faculty is reached, we try to ensure that all trainers have the opportunity to rotate as well as time for breaks etc. The day consists of 4 sessions with breaks in between and lunch is provided.
Get involved
There are opportunities for:
- Trainers with more than two years' experience who can support clinical case interpretation
- Trainers with more than two years' experience who can support practical scanning
- Trainers with less than two years' experience who can shadow experienced trainers
Case interpretation trainers
Key responsibilities
- Provide expert instruction in case interpretation
- Supervise and support trainees during small-group case interpretation sessions
- Tailor teaching approaches to trainees' varying levels of experience
- Ensure adherence to BSE guidelines and best practices
- Provide guidance to other members of faculty
Requirements
- Extensive experience in echocardiography including interpreting echo in daily clinical practice
- Holds BSE accreditation with >2 years' experience post-accreditation
- Strong teaching skills with a passion for training and mentoring
- Ability to adapt explanations to different levels of trainee expertise
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Practical scanning trainers
Key responsibilities
- Provide expert instruction in transthoracic echocardiography, including image acquisition and interpretation
- Supervise and support trainees during hands-on scanning sessions
- Tailor teaching approaches to trainees' varying levels of experience
- Ensure adherence to BSE guidelines and best practices
- Provide guidance to other members of faculty
Requirements
- Extensive experience in echocardiography
- Holds BSE accreditation with >2 years' experience post-accreditation
- Strong teaching skills with a passion for training and mentoring
- Ability to adapt explanations to different levels of trainee expertise
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Shadowing
Key responsibilities
- Support case review trainers and practical scanning trainers with teaching
- Support trainees with questions outside of specific sessions
- Develop skills and expertise in teaching to prepare for future faculty opportunities
Requirements
- Experience in echocardiography
- Holds BSE accreditation with <2 years' experience post-accreditation
- An interest in developing teaching skills for training and mentoring
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
