The office team is responsible for the day to day running of the BSE and overseeing the different functions such as finance, membership, education, events and marketing as well as management of the accreditation training pathways.
To get to know our office team better and find out what makes them tick, we’d like to take you behind the scenes with our fun and friendly Q&A. Our Marketing and Education Manager, Ms Hatty Grant, who oversees all our marketing and education activities, joins us on the big green sofa next!
What is your role and how long have you been with the BSE?
I’m the Marketing and Education Manager. Together with my team (Lyndsey, Senior Education Officer and Angela, Digital Communications and Website Officer), I look after the portfolio of educational and research events and online learning, support the Education Committee with guidelines, liaise with our industry partners, oversee our marketing channels and lead on development of our website.
Terrifyingly, it will be eight years this year since I joined – time has flown! I remember stepping into the office in Docklands on my first day and reading about the conference (BSEcho 2018) I needed to take on with a month and a half to go; it has been a whirlwind adventure ever since.
What is your employment background?
I studied International Events Management at the University of Brighton, with a placement year working in NHS Learning and Development. From there, I worked at the Royal Society of Medicine covering a number of different medical specialties, before moving to the role of Marketing and Events Officer at the BSE in 2018. However, during university I was also a home care assistant, which gave me a real appreciation of the front line care our members provide.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
We are all human – everyone makes mistakes but it’s about how you own and overcome them.
What is your greatest achievement?
Pivoting our flagship conference, BSEcho, to virtual during the COVID lockdowns – we had to make some really quick decisions to work out how we could continue to offer our members important education during such a difficult time.
What are you most passionate about?
Right now, I’d have to say running – anyone who follows me on social media will know that I ran my first half marathon in May. To go from couch to half marathon in nine months feels like a real achievement – and I’ve really got the bug!
How would you like to be remembered?
For nearly always having a smile on my face – no one can be happy all the time but generally I’m a positive person.
Favourite…
Album?
The Wonder Years – Suburbia I’ve Given You All and Now I’m Nothing
Film?
The Day After Tomorrow. Or Shrek. It’s hard to choose!
TV show?
Supernatural
Hobby?
I love to read – right now training is taking up a lot of my non-work time but I can always find time to read a book!
Holiday?
Any combo of hot but not too hot, 1-2 activities per day*, adequate but not excessive time by a body of water. France and Italy are particular favourites.
*Can include eating
What keeps you awake at night?
I’m generally a good sleeper but I do live in the middle of Brixton in London – so sometimes the nightlife can be a bit noisy!
Three words you would use to describe yourself
Organised, friendly, direct
Your ‘claim to fame’
There was a factory fire near my house when I was a teenager and I was on the news talking very embarrassingly about the ‘toxic fumes’. As you can tell, I don’t really have a claim to fame…
Who would you take to a desert island?
My brother and sister – we’d argue over how best to survive but we’d work together in the end.
Which 3 guests (living or dead) would make up your ideal dinner party?
Chrishell Stause (from Selling Sunset), Meryl Streep and my Grandma Jean – she’s the BSE’s biggest fan on social media!
